All things superbills
Okay, I know the phrase “superbill” sounds a little intimidating, but it’s actually pretty simple.
What Is a Superbill?
A superbill is essentially a detailed, itemized receipt provided by an out-of-network healthcare or therapy provider. It includes information your insurance company may need to process an out-of-network claim, such as your name, the dates and types of services provided, where your appointments took place, a diagnostic code, and a service code.
How Do Superbills Work at Leading Heart Therapy?
When using a superbill, you are considered a private-pay client and are responsible for paying the full session fee at the time of service. Leading Heart Therapy does not bill your insurance company on your behalf. Instead, superbills are system-generated and, upon request, are automatically sent to you at the beginning of each month. Your superbill will include all services provided during the previous month. For example, in September, you would receive a superbill for your August appointments. Once you receive your superbill, you can submit it to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Any reimbursement would go to you after you have already paid Leading Heart Therapy for your sessions.
Will My Insurance Reimburse Me?
That depends entirely on your insurance plan. Some plans offer out-of-network benefits and may reimburse you for a portion of what you paid. Others may not offer out-of-network coverage at all. Before choosing this option, contact your insurance company to find out whether your plan accepts superbills, whether you have out-of-network mental health benefits, and what portion of the cost may be reimbursed. Reimbursement is not guaranteed, so it is important to understand your benefits before deciding whether this option works for you.
The Short Version
A superbill is simply an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. You pay the full private-pay fee to your therapist at the time of your session. Your therapist provides a superbill afterward, and you submit it to your insurance company. If your plan provides out-of-network reimbursement, your insurance company may then reimburse you for a portion of what you paid.
